Scientist in Marine Ecosystem Monitoring to The Greenland Climates Research at the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources

The Greenland Climate Research Centre (GCRC) at the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources invites applications for a Scientist in Marine Ecosystem Monitoring for a two-year position, with the possibility of extension.

The position includes coordinating the MarineBasis Zackenberg monitoring programme, which forms part of the Greenland Ecosystem Monitoring (GEM) programme.  The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to develop and participate in additional research projects.

About GCRC

The Greenland Climate Research Centre conducts interdisciplinary, long-term research and monitoring of physical, chemical, and biological processes in Greenland's fjords and marine environments. Our research focuses on the impacts of climate change on marine ecosystems and Greenlandic society. The Centre also contributes to research-based education and provides scientific advice to the Government of Greenland.

The Position

In collaboration with partner institutions, the successful candidate will plan and participate in the annual field campaign in the Zackenberg area of Northeast Greenland, ensure the scientific and operational quality of the monitoring programme, and participate in GEM Coordination Group.

The position requires strong organizational skills, experience in managing and analysing large datasets (preferably long-term monitoring and time series), and the ability to secure external research funding. The position offers opportunities to develop and lead research projects that build on the monitoring programme, and to attract external projects that strengthens and expands its scientific impact. A collaborative approach to science and a vision to work together with other projects and monitoring programs is beneficial. The successful candidate will become part of an interdisciplinary research team and an international research environment working on integrated studies in oceanography, marine ecology, and climate-related processes, with a focus on understanding natural variability and climate-driven changes in Arctic marine ecosystems.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate is expected to:

• Serve as scientific lead for MarineBasis Zackenberg. 
• Plan and participate in annual field activities. 
• Collect, manage, analyse, and report monitoring and research data. 
• Develop new interdisciplinary research projects and prepare funding applications. 
• Publish research findings in international peer-reviewed scientific journals. 
• Contribute to teaching and educational activities. 

Qualifications

Applicants must hold a MSc or a PhD in marine biology, oceanography, or a closely related discipline.

The following qualifications will be emphasized:

• Scientific expertise in a relevant field. 
• A publication record in international peer-reviewed journals. 
• Demonstrated ability to secure external research funding. 
• Experience with marine or environmental monitoring or research. 
• Experience with arctic marine ecosystems.
• An established international research network. 
• Experience working with large datasets, such as long-term time series. 

Salary and Terms of Employment

Salary and employment conditions, including relocation expenses and entitlement to travel to and from Greenland at the beginning and end of employment, will be determined in accordance with the applicable collective agreement between the Government of Greenland and the relevant negotiating organization.

Housing

The Greenland Institute of Natural Resources provides rental accommodation during the first year of employment. Thereafter, housing must be arranged on the private market.
